Hamsters now available

Posted by Jeffrey Lee on 00:18, 10/6/2004 | ,

If you haven't heard of Hamsters, you're obviously dead. In my opinion this is one of the greatest, if not the greatest game by Tom Cooper - and now it's available for free, straight from our free games section. Surreal settings, cool sunglasses, fluffy bunnies, shameless advertising, great music, dastardly level design, cool sunglasses, and strategicaly placed frogs - everything that makes a Tom Cooper game great is included here.

The aim of the game is to guide your mallet-wielding hamster through each of the 80 levels, squishing everything in his path. And for those of you wanting a reason to go on an adrenaline fueled whacking fest using a giant mallet, it's because you forgot to charge your laser gun before leaving home in the morning. If it's good enough for Cooper, it's good enough for me.

Hamsters should run fine on anything from RISC OS 3 to Select, as well as RISC OS 5 via Aemulor Pro.

Unregistered user Nice game. What a bonus having all these Tom Cooper games. Did you have to tinker to make it compatible Phlamethrower?

Unregistered user I think you missed the bit at the bottom of the download page "Original game by Tom Cooper. Strong ARM/Risc PC compatability by Jeffrey Lee and Jason Tribbeck." :)

Unregistered user Many, many thanks to all of those whose efforts have contributed to making this wonderful game available. I haven't played anything this fun, or innovative, in ages. And it's so realistic too: three hefty whacks with a mallet to squish a tortoise is about right, non? ;-)

In case it's of interest, I've included below a list of the passwords for those levels I've completed. I look forward to seeing the passwords for other levels -- or even finishing them myself!

Unregistered user It's not very happy on a RiscStation running select 3i3, shame that, maybe I should try it on select 3i4.

First level played OK, then at the start of level two, the screen became corrupted and the machine just froze, any ideas????

Unregistered user Mjollnir: I presume that your problem is getting onto the upper layer. The secret is to remember that your mallet is a sensitive object (no, really, you don't wanna hurt its feelings). Holding down the return key for varying amounts of time affects the 'power' of the thwack. For instance, a quick press is good for squishing frogs, but a longer press allows you to jump higher.

Anyway, the trick with level 33 is to position your hamster to the immediate right of the four grey blocks. Then press return quite quickly, but long enough to create an almost-medium wallop. It requires some experimwntation, but it does work. This should flip you onto the 'step', and a quick wallop should get you onto the upper layer.

And, if you can't fathom that (practice makes perfect!), then the next level code is 'expensive'...

Hmm, with a name like Adam Lloyd, I would have expected a native English speaker. Oh well.

Anyway, can you please correct this in the article:

mallet weilding hamster

to this:

mallet-wielding hamster

Thanks! It's been bugging me since I read this originally. I'm afraid the deeply-buried anal retentive grammar Nazi RISC OS user inside me gets out every once in a while.
