New VProtect module

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 11:52, 4/2/2002 | , ,

As reported on the Cybervillage, Pineapple Software have released a new version of the VProtect module. This module constantly monitors the computer memory to check for any virus activity. It's free, but if you do get a virus warning you'll need a virus killer to deal with it - such as Pineapple's commercial one - which is a fair enough trade off for such a useful module. Download it NOW! :)

Unregistered user Are people still writing viruses for RISC OS? If not, why release a new version of the protection mod? Is there a place on the web which details the viruses for RISC OS?

Unregistered user I think you answered your own question there ;)

As for details on the viruses (viri?) it's in the virus killer, so I doubt it's in their interest to put it on the web. VZap on Paul Vigay's site has some info in it, but his anti-MS website won't allow me in today :(

Unregistered user Viruses. The common mistake is Virii. It's viruses because it doesn't come from the Latin.

Unregistered user Virions?

Unregistered user Come on then - who's writing RISC OS viruses? :-)

Unregistered user That version of VProtect doesn't differ significantly with the version in Select. So what's the rush about ? ;-)

Unregistered user Perhaps because not everyone has Select because it won't run on every RISC OS machine?

Unregistered user Yes, personally I'd rather download a 13KB archive than try to install Select on my A5000s and A310!

Especially if they're all connected to the Internet via ADSL - fingers crossed they'll be doing some serious downloadage come a fortnight's time...

Unregistered user Pineapple have actively ceased to describe what viruses Killer detects. It also detects *lots* of viruses that aren't out there, and only they have samples. Having once played with VGuard, Slayer's VProtect replacement, not even VProtect is that good - it lies too much :)

Unregistered user As reported on the Cybervillage, eh? Well, I think I got the news up on riscos.org way before they decided to nick it! And I was only looking because VA5000 ships at the moment with a 1998 version, and wanted a newer one to boot in front of the little kiddies. :)

Unregistered user Virii is *singular* latin for poison. IIRC.

Unregistered user Two things:

1. This will clear up the plural of virus: http://www.perl.com/language/misc/virus.html (Rich, can you make that a link? [done - RG])

2. My VGuard was seriously buggy - it was never a priority. I might fix it one day :)

Unregistered user Yes, I saw after I posted that RO.org had the same story, but Cybervillage has the news right there at the top of page one, you have to dig for RO.org's news. At least that's what I keep telling Paul so he'll put the news on the front page like everyone else ;)

Unregistered user Yes, viri is the plural of vir, which is latin for man. virii has a more interesting argument:
"Those confused souls who write *virii are tacitly positing the existence of the non-word *virius, and declining it as though it were like filius. It's true that l/r are both linguals that sometimes get interchanged, and that f/v are just a change in voicing[2], but that's just reaching. *Virii is still completely silly, so don't do that; otherwise, everyone will know you're just a blathering script kiddie."
