Anyone know why it's now standard for DVDs to come in cardboard sleeves, over shrinkwrap and inside plastic cases? I used to think that the cardboard sleeves were added at the last minute to correct errors on the printed case inlay (and some definitely need their linguistic errors correcting!), but it is now de rigueur, seemingly? :s |

You can use more advanced printing techniques on the card than you can the glossy ash paper used inside the sleeve, as well as things like metallisation and holograms to make the product look more appealing on the shelf. |

There's also a subliminal suggestion that there's something special about versions with cardboard cases - like they're a limited edition, or a deluxe edition. It typically adds a pound or two to the price for, well, pence of cardboard!
You'll also notice that the cheaper versions tend to drop the cardboard wrapper. Typically once first run is over, it's an unnecessary extra, so is dropped in favour of lowest-common-denominator packagaing as the price plummets.
The same trick is used for "Day One Edition" video games, which are typically still available months or even years later! |
