Faster StrongArms on the way?

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 17:37, 23/8/2000 | , ,

An article on The Register's website states that Intel have demo'd an 800MHz StrongArm processor, with 1GHz on the way.

Will the new range make their way into RISC OS machines? The new chips are being aimed at the home market, not mobiles; this could still mean that the chip is optimised for non-desktop use though.

Thanks to Tommy Lowe for the tip.

Unregistered user As stated on the German Heise Newsticker, Intel targets the new processor family on the mobile market, where it's ability to scale between high performance, more consumption and lower performance, less consumption is really useful.

Maybe a rewritten RISC OS allows for the use of SA2.

Unregistered user The new processor family is clearly targetted at much more than
the mobile market. How can a modile "anything" survive with a 1.5 watt
processor inside ! The only use for 1Ghz / 1.5watt processor has to be something much more powerful
like a desktop or set top box. Even a set top box is essentially a cut down desktop. Finally, the
desktop, laptop and palmtop devices are all converging with the only item preventing
an all in one device being the size of the screen.

Unregistered user "Mobile" can mean things like the Palm, not just 'phones; the second C|Net article points to the new StrongARMs going into Palm devices.
