It should stay up, whatever. Even if one node fails, it should change to a new node so that the site should never go down.

Still not heard anything, which is strange.

That does sound suspicious, but if it were an account violation, I think we would be seeing this page. Very odd, nothing on the site, nothing on the status page, no notices, no email contact - I'm interested to hear what the reason is.

That's the theory, yes. But not every cloud has a silver lining - cloud-based systems have failed in the past.

The site was down a few days ago too. I'd assumed it was intentional during administrator work.

Yes the work was needed to update some of the menus and file links.
The one today wasn't. Seems to be something to do with the hosting. Still checking the logs and files to make sure nothing was played with but nothing so far.

Possibly one of the most shambolic website launches I've ever seen.

Mind you, at least it actually launched tongue

I think in retrospect, a whole site dedicated to the game was stretching things slightly. Should really write a couple of articles though. It's a fun game.

Thanks John and Jason, He should be coming home this afternoon. His eldest brother hit him round the head with a tonka toy. He's had some stitches and been kept in for observation, but he seems a lot better now.

Owww! madban Hope it's not as bad as it sounds.

Have you considered restricting exposure to Hamsters? (Or increasing exposure, depending on your parenting philosophy!)

Best wishes to your son smile

If it is any consolation, I was hit on the head with a lump mallet as a child, and it didn't... no... wait... maybe it explains a lot...

(Edit, looks at date of Andrew H's post... hmm... seems I'm still suffering the effects!)

Well. It seems that this really is the most shambolic website launch ever - it seems that the site was registered on 7 Dec 2009, and Mr. Hodgson made his first public appearance on 11 Dec 2009. Since then, the domain has been 404 on 14 Dec 2009, 15 Dec 2009, 28 Jan 2010, was taken down "due to personal circumstances" on 4 Feb 2010, and was missing again today.

And still no clear or definitive plan of action for 'reviving' the Acorn brand, or whatever it was that was the point behind all of this. Nice idea, flawed implementation...

Okay, I emailed Mr Hodgson to query about the site and here was the rather disillusioned reply I got:

Hi Jason,

The site is gone. A lack of interest from either community, abusive emails, being treated like crap, being told I know nothing when I have emails and documents from people involved. All of that killed Acorn info. I still have all the files and if someone wants it they can have it, the domain, the files and the stress.

Acorn cambridge was killed when the investors pulled out. We had 3 prototypes almost ready, but Castles lack of a forthcoming licence and ROL's lack of working OS (for the systems we had) made them pull out.

Once Castle and ROL have either sorted themselves out or gone out of business, there might be a chance of bring something to market.

Best Wishes
Andy

Lack of interest from the community? What?

(a) If the community isn't interested, then what's most of this thread been about?
(b) Were we even allowed to show interest, considering that any signs of interest were treated with replies along the lines of "You won't hear another word about what I am doing UNTIL it is done."? That sentence to me makes it sound like they didn't want us to be interested.
(c) And sure we could sit around all day and speculate, but there's been so much failure associated with RISC OS (and the activities of acorncomputers.info) that it probably was much better for everyone to forget about them until they got their act together and had something concrete to announce.

I queried him about a few of these points, and I got a very interesting email back in response. I had considered not posting it up, but in light of the amount of mystery surrounding this whole thing, I thought it would be worthwhile (and interesting to see what projects they were considering).

So. Are you going to take up the offer and have the domain name and the 23.07GB of files?

I call Walter Mitty. His habit of continually complaining about "Abuse emails" and blaming everyone else is quite tedious.

In other news, it looks like someone's now trying to relaunch the Commodore brand to flog x86 machines. Although admittedly they are using a custom case - a bit more work than I think Acorn Computers '06 ever put in.

"The new model will feature an integrated touchpad, optical disc drive, flash card reader, and media buttons. In the back, you get a range of ports including VGA and DVI outputs, 4 USB ports, Ethernet, and a couple of serial ports — remember those?"
I expect that getting an original C64 on the web will probably sustain more interest than this Commodore USA '10.

They also say they're in a bit of legal hot water. No surprises there, then!

although the company will be dissolved unless anyone else wants it. Just because one part of the idea has fallen, doesn't mean we don't carry on.
You obviously found someone interested in taking the company, then.

The company was due to be dissolved on the anniversary of the incorporation date. (Which is duport's policy for non-required companies.)

I was contacted and agreed to transfer ownership to it's new owner. They asked for the discussion to be kept confidential until they are ready to release a proper press statement. I will say that I have no information about the plans for the company, and will not be able to comment further. Any questions should be directed to the new owners.

I will however be very interested in learning more about their plans in due course and will reserve any judgement until they release some further information.
