@Andrew - I'm very sorry to hear about the threats. I am sure any decision you make will be right one. I'm not going to say any more on the matter, as its rather depressing to be honest. Oh, and no offence was taken in the slightest - I know it can be quite difficult to judge whether a posted message will be taken in a way in was not intended, but you've no worries there. Thanks Alan. No offence intended, yours was just the last message of the board at the time. |

Personally, I'm (unusually optimistically) reserving judgement. I know we lost David Barrow and Justin Fletcher in similar ways, but don't forget (mentioning no names...) that there have been false alarms too. We'll probably know for sure in a couple of months or so...
I'm afraid that DB is no more than a petulant troll with insecurity issues. But your example of JF (and probably most RISC OS developers at some point and other personalities) partly answers your next question:
Frankly, in my naivety, I don't see why he would have received threatening emails in the first place. Surely any such internet dickwads have absolutely no knowledge of Andrew's family whatsoever and no means to do anything? And what did they take objection to in the first place? Surely a trademark can't be that fiercely adored?
Anyone with a small amount of time on their hands can dig up endless personal details about someone else. Mostly without moving from their computer, too. And that's without even the latest Facebook nonsense. I think you know that.
The problem is that this kind of reaction is exactly what the antagonist would get his kicks over. There's a couple of likely candidates here, but of course I have no evidence whatsoever. But for an excellent example of this type of person and what they might do, look at Tarquin Mills, and his obsession against Microsoft, etc. |

Well, this whole thing just got more interesting. I have just received an email from Mr Clairet (trademark owner), which I will share and makes for very interesting reading.
Dear Andrew,
I got with your email a clearer view of your project, thanks for it.
It makes some sense to me, as your project intends to stick to the DNA of the historical Acorn. The 2006 relaunch was, I believe, a marketing mistake, as Wintel PCs are increasingly dominated by computer giants, and it is difficult to be different on this standardized market, and ACORN DNA is not Intel Inside.
Currently, the Acorn brand is not for sale: I am working on ARM based smartbooks collaboration, and I wish to continue this task in the coming months.
Licensing the Acorn name for software is clearly an open possibility I am ready to discuss and advance with you.
My visit to London moved, now it is scheduled on 5thJanuary 2010. Does it make sense for you to meet at these date and stage?
Best regards,
Julien Clairet
Unrelated to earlier? possibly, however it was definitely for sale 2 days ago. I will be very interested in seeing who releases a new ARM laptop. |

So Julien Clairet is working on bringing to market an Acorn-branded ARM netbook, which, due to being ARM powered, could conceivably be made to run RISC OS? That's certainly very interesting (although it could easily become a lot less interesting if the smartbook isn't very good, or if it's going to be unreasonably difficult to port RISC OS to it ) |

Possibly not the same person, but there's a Julien Clairet on LinkedIn who's current position is 'Marketing Director at Apricot Computers'.

Shahid Sultan The previous owner of (wintel-based) Acorn Computers. I sense a conspiracy!
Also, Apricots and Sultan(a)s taking over Acorns? What a bunch of fruits and nuts. |

Initially I would have said so, however "Apricot Computers" business is based on x86 netbooks and it's not that surprising that they might want to produce an ARM netbook. Just a weird coincidence that they used to call themselves Acorn.
Still how utterly pointless the second half of this thread has been, all the hand wringing over buying back the Acorn name when it's not even for sale,

So. The guy who was making x86 laptops running Windows under the Acorn brand name now wants to make ARM netbooks running ? under the Acorn brand name.
Is that essentially correct? |

Nah, I suspect he's planning to make them under the Apricot name. But he's holding onto the Acorn brand for the moment. |

I suspect he has been watching the interest and decided to hold on to it. He has never, since I have known him, been interested in Acorn at all. So I find the talk of Acorn DNA & ARM laptops suspect at the least. |

I get Joomla ' website creation tools' I assume its genuine as its not April 1st. Joomla is a content management system, and probably just a default page from what ever web hosting is in use. The ownership of the domain, AFAICT, is the same. Nothing to see here, move along.

Very much the sentiments discussed on IRC. A "2 day wonder". And here I was, hoping for a long, drawn out saga ;-) |

I get Joomla ' website creation tools' I assume its genuine as its not April 1st. That would be me. Again. I still own the domain and company, although the company will be dissolved unless anyone else wants it. Just because one part of the idea has fallen, doesn't mean we don't carry on.
I still intend to bring together software, resources and documentation to make development easier for the community.

That's great; there's no shortage of need for that. However, both riscos.info and riscosopen.org are very active in this department. You should consider contributing to them. |

I certainly intend to. The work I will be doing is for both the 8bit and RISCOS community. I hope that it will compliment the work that has already taken place. Both of the sites you mention are very good sites, as are STH, TIC and a host of others. I hope that it will help people that might only know about 8bit or RISC to take get a better understanding and greater interest in the community as a whole. Any new resources will be fully shared with the community and specialist sites. |

I notice that as of this morning, the domain is back to its generic Joomla portal, with all external content having vanished...

Yes, they are all at the some host. It's a cloud hosting solution with 100GB space and 100000GB bandwidth a month.
I've not received any "letters" but it does look strange.
Hopefully they can enlighten me shortly. |

If so, then the first thing that springs to my mind is the Best free RISC OS games discussion - looking back at where you said you were mirroring the ISO images that Jason had uploaded, it was on the acorncomputers.info site. Perhaps the same person who emailed Rob Heaton to object to him uploading any complained to your host? What's their policy on such things?
Having said that, I would have expected that person to email you first before going to your host.
(This is just speculation: a case of connecting a couple of dots that may actually be unrelated.) |

That was precisely the same conclusion I came to - although I also wondered that the host should have sent a message first. However, it wouldn't be the first time that a webhost has nervous trigger-fingers when receiving legal threats; unplug first, discuss later once the lawyers have gone. |

Yes, they are all the same host with different registrars. Not sure what the policy is, although I have had 8bit roms, PC drivers and some RISC OS roms in the subdomain mirrors for over a month now with no issues. I also can not access the joomla backend. Keeps saying the password is wrong??? The hosting company are normally very good and answer emails in minutes. Just not today. |

Ah, but has anybody actually complained about it thus far? (Publicly hosting ROMs is another contentious issue, 4.02 is still being sold for a fiver, for example.)
I also can not access the joomla backend. Keeps saying the password is wrong??? The hosting company are normally very good and answer emails in minutes. Just not today. Could be a technical fault then. Do they have a status page? My hosts are great like that, their status pages are hosted on a totally seperate server so that they're always up even if a whole datacentre goes down. |

Looks like the domain is okay, it's just the hosting. It doesn't seem like there's much in the way of problems: http://status.tsohost.co.uk/
