It appears that the Rio Car MPEG player - formerly known as Empeg - is no longer being produced. Although SONICblue are looking to work with car manufacturer they're not going to "continue with plans to become a car audio aftermarket brand".
For those of you whose memories don't quite reach back into the dim and distant past of RISC OS hardware, Empeg was started by Hugo Fiennes who was also responsible for The Serial Port. The Empeg hardware was recently on display at the RISC OS 2000 show in Epsom last year.

Except Hugo Fiennes wasn't anything to do with Vertical Twist - he owned the TSP name, and Vertical Twist was created when he left...
Sorry to be such a pedant ;-) |

Ah, so if, by his leaving, the name was changed, it was he who was responsible for Vertical Twist - in that without his leaving there would be no name change. Tortuous logic a-go-go! :p |

The empeg is a fantastic product with one major shortfal, one that we'll all recognise. It's bloody expensive to the point of being overpriced, for something that's quite specialist.
What's different, however, is that it's actually /over/ specified. The CPU use is surprisingly low on one. |

They do say they'll be continuing software development, so perhaps someone else will pick up the idea and come out with a cheaper hardware spec? Or perhaps I'm just out where the pigs fly ATM :) |
